Most of southern Manitoba now under winter storm watch for the weekend

A winter storm watch is now in effect in most of southern and central Manitoba, as a low-pressure system coming from south of the border is set to bring heavy snow to the province’s southwest this weekend, Environment Canada says.

The system from Montana will reach southwestern Manitoba Saturday evening and continue moving northeast through Monday, the weather agency said Friday

An area of heavy snow and gusty winds is forecast to cover much of the southern half of the province by Sunday morning. Regions under the winter storm watch could see snowfall totals from 25 to 40 centimetres, according to Environment Canada.

Winds could reach up to 80 kilometres per hour, resulting in blowing snow. That could make travel difficult or hazardous due to reduced visibility, the weather agency warns. It recommends avoiding travel if possible Saturday night through Monday.
