Memorial Drive to remain closed throughout morning commute due to ongoing police situation

Calgary police say an incident that began Thursday remains ongoing Friday morning and will impact the morning commute.

A spokesperson with the Calgary Police Service told CBC News that, as of 6:30 a.m., the situation remains ongoing.

Memorial Drive is closed between 52 Street S.E. and 68 Street S.E. is expected to remain closed throughout the morning commute.

In an update on social media at 6:07 a.m., police are asking Penbrooke residents to remain sheltered in place and take direction from officers on scene.

“Those who are unable to access their residence will not be able to do so until the situation is resolved,” reads the update.

The situation began around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.

That day, police said shots were fired in the direction of tactical unit officers as they were executing a search warrant at a residence in the east Calgary community of Penbrooke Meadows.

There are no injuries to anyone involved, police said.

The residence is located in the 300 block of Penswood Way S.E.

“We currently have multiple police resources on scene and have contained the suspect residence,” police said in a statement early Thursday evening. 

Police said they will update the public on social media throughout the morning.

Anyone who has been unable to access their home because of this incident is being asked to find alternative accommodations for the evening. Police say assistance is available at 403-266-1234.

“We apologize for any inconvenience as we look to resolve this matter safely for all,” the police statement said.
