Woman injured after unprovoked shooting with air gun in bar: Winnipeg police

A man has been arrested after Winnipeg police say he shot a 42-year-old woman sitting beside him in a bar without provocation.

The man, an 18-year-old from St. Theresa Point, has been charged with aggravated assault and was detained in custody, Winnipeg police said in a news release Saturday.

They say officers were called to a home in the 500 block of William Avenue, between Furby and Isabel streets, around 4:30 p.m. Friday with a report a woman had been shot.

They found the 42-year-old woman at the residence.

She was taken to hospital in stable condition, but suffered a facial injury that will require multiple surgeries, police said.

Officers then went to a bar on Maryland Street, south of Notre Dame, where the assault was believed to have happened, but the suspect had left before they arrived.

About an hour later, the man returned to the bar, where he was arrested. Officers found a CO2 air pistol and CO2 cannisters on him.

Police allege the man, whom the woman did not know, was sitting beside her inside the bar when he took out the air gun and shot her without provocation.

The man has also been changed with possession of a weapon and carrying a concealed weapon or ammunition that’s prohibited.
