Man in hospital with serious head injury after takedown by Winnipeg police on Corydon Avenue

A man was seriously injured on Sunday when he hit his head on the ground during an encounter with Winnipeg police, according to Manitoba’s police watchdog.

Officers were patrolling Corydon Avenue, between Doncaster Street and Tuxedo Avenue, on Sunday at about 8:20 p.m. when they allegedly saw a man “yelling and leaving a store with merchandise,” according to a news release from the Independent Investigation Unit on Monday.

Officers ordered the man to stop but he took off, the IIU states. Police caught up with him and a “use of force encounter occurred.”

The man hit his head on the ground and in the process went unconscious.

He remains in hospital where he is “being monitored for a brain bleed,” according to the news release.

The IIU was notified about what happened on Monday and has taken over the investigation. The organization investigates all serious incidents involving Manitoba police.

The IIU is asking anyone with information or footage of the incident to contact its investigators at 1-844-667-6060.
