8 rescued from townhouse fire in Winnipeg, 2 sent to hospital in critical condition
Eight people were rescued from a burning townhouse in Winnipeg’s Tyndall Park area on Wednesday morning, with two of them sent to hospital in critical condition.
Emergency crews were called to the fire around 3:30 a.m. and found it “fully involved from top to bottom,” district fire Chief Kevin Hay said.
The fire started in the top suite of the two-storey townhouse and spread into the bottom one. The two people sent to hospital were from the top suite, Hay said.
The townhouse is on Keewatin Street, which was closed to traffic in both directions between Tyndall and Burrows avenues for several hours.
The fire was declared under control at 4:40 a.m. and the roads reopened just before 7:30 a.m.
The front of the townhouse is lined by tall trees along the public sidewalk, which created an added challenge in fighting the fire, Hay said.
“We had to set up our aerial ladder that had to go in between the trees to put some guys on the roof, but they did a good job.”
The fire department is investigating the cause with its canine unit, a dog trained in detecting accelerants possibly used to ignite or spread a fire, Hay said.
Damage estimates are not yet available.
Emergency crews also rushed to a house fire in the North End around 4:20 a.m. Wednesday.
Firefighters found smoke billowing from a one-storey house on Magnus Avenue (between McGregor and Andrews streets) and discovered flames had spread to a neighbouring home, a news release from the City of Winnipeg said.
Trapped person rescued
There were also reports that one person was trapped inside the first house, the release said.
That person was rescued, and a second person was treated by paramedics as well. Both were sent to hospital, one in critical condition and the other in unstable condition, the city said.
The fire was declared under control at 5:50 a.m.
Damage estimates are not available at this time and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
