Emergency crews tackle fire in downtown Winnipeg

Traffic on one of downtown Winnipeg’s busiest streets was blocked off Friday night as firefighters battled a blaze in a building that housed a grocery store.

According to the city’s website, crews were called to the fire at 7:42 p.m.

A few minutes later, several fire and emergency vehicles could be seen on Main Street, just north of the entrance to the Disraeli Freeway, where smoke was rising from a three-storey building with a sign on the ground floor that read, “Full House Grocery.”

As crews responded to the fire, Winnipeg police blocked traffic in both directions on Main Street between Logan Avenue and the Disraeli Freeway.

Shortly after 9 p.m., a spokesperson for the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said the fire, in the 500 block of Main Street, was “well-involved,” forcing crews to fight it from the exterior of the building.

It’s expected firefighters will remain at the scene through the night and into the morning, the spokesperson said in an email.
