Operation Red Nose short on volunteers, calling for more over the next three weeks

With three major weekends ahead for holiday events, Operation Red Nose is calling for more volunteers to help ensure people get home safe.

Elisha Dacey, the volunteer media liaison with Operation Red Nose, said they are currently falling short on volunteer totals.

“Last weekend was probably the most hectic. At one point we had, I believe, 30 requests in the queue, and we only had nine teams that evening to go help them all. So it was a long wait,” said Dacey.

Each Operation Red Nose team consists of three people – one to drive the caller’s car home and two to drive with the caller.

Dacey said they would ideally like to have 20 teams of three – roughly 100 more volunteers.

Without the right number of people helping out, Dacey said it is possible people might make the wrong choice when trying to get home.

“The goal for Operation Red Nose is to drive you and your vehicle home safely. People don’t want to leave their vehicles behind, and if we’re not able to get there and drive them and their vehicle home, they may choose to drive their vehicle home themselves,” she said.

“Not only is it illegal, but it could lead to serious injury or death…So at the very least, you could avoid a very costly ticket. But honestly, if people have to wait and you’re impaired already, we’re afraid that they’ll make the wrong choice.”

For those who want to volunteer, they can do so by signing up online.
