Two Winnipeg homes to be demolished following overnight fires

Two homes in Winnipeg will be demolished after they caught fire early Sunday morning.

The first fire happened at a two-storey house on Young Street between Ellice and Sargent avenues, the City of Winnipeg said in a news release Sunday.

Crews arrived at the home shortly after midnight and had the fire under control at 1:35 a.m. Some neighbours had to leave their homes, but were able to go back inside once the fire was out, the city said.

Due to significant fire, smoke and water damage, the city ordered an emergency demolition of the home.

The section of Young Street will be closed for part of Sunday morning. The city warned residents to watch out for slippery conditions, since the water used to put out the fire has frozen.

Crews got to the second fire at a vacant two-and-a-half storey home on Burrows Avenue between Powers and Andrews streets at 2:14 a.m. Sunday. The house was starting to collapse at that point, the city said.

They had the fire under control shortly after 4 a.m, the city said.

The city also ordered an emergency demolition on the home, which was already damaged after a fire there on Feb. 10.

The section of Burrows Avenue was also closed.

No injuries reported

Crews also put out another fire earlier Saturday night.

Fire crews were called to a two-storey home on Toronto Street between Sargent and Wellington Avenues at 10:39 p.m., and had the fire under control about 15 minutes later. Occupants of that home evacuated safely.

No injuries were reported in any of the three fires, and the city is investigating their causes.
