MLA Mark Wasyliw removed ‘effective immediately’ from NDP caucus

Manitoba’s NDP government has removed MLA Mark Wasyliw from its caucus after the party learned one of his business partners is the acting criminal defence lawyer for convicted sexual predator Peter Nygard.

“MLA Wasyliw’s failure to demonstrate good judgment does not align with our caucus principles of mutual respect and trust,” NDP Caucus Chair Mike Moyes said in a news release.

“As such, MLA Wasyliw can no longer continue his role in our caucus.”

Wasyliw was kicked out “effective immediately” from Manitoba’s government caucus on Monday. He is still the MLA for Fort Garry.

CBC News has reached out to Wasyliw for comment.

The MLA faced renewed scrutiny from inside and outside his party last year when he revealed he would continue his law practice as a criminal defence lawyer after being re-elected.

The former Winnipeg School Division trustee was first elected as an MLA in 2019.
