Man accused of lighting Winnipeg house on fire after police tried to arrest him

A man is in unstable condition after he lit a fire in a bungalow in Winnipeg’s St. Vital neighbourhood, police allege.

Officers went to the home on Worthington Avenue, near St. Mary’s Road, around 1 p.m. Monday to arrest a man on a number of outstanding warrants.

The man was unco-operative and refused to leave the house, police said.

At some point he ignited the fire and smoke could be seen coming out of it, police said.

Fire crews were called at 2:30 p.m. and extinguished the flames shortly after 3 p.m.

The man was taken to hospital in unstable condition for treatment for smoke inhalation.

The incident is under investigation and damage estimates to the home are not currently available.

Information on the man’s age or nature of the warrants was not released by police.
