Brandon police officer charged with assault, theft after noise complaint incident: police watchdog

A Brandon police officer has been charged after he was accused of assault and theft by two men while responding to a noise complaint last fall, Manitoba’s police watchdog says.

Const. Darwin Raga of the Brandon Police Service is charged with two counts of assault and one count of theft under $5,000, said a Friday news release from the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, which investigates all serious matters involving police.

He was released on Monday on a promise to appear in court at a future date, the watchdog says.

On Sept. 3, Raga allegedly grabbed a man and forced him onto the hood of a police car, knocking a cellphone out of the hands of another man, which hit the ground before he took it, the news release says.

The watchdog agency announced it was investigating the incident on Oct. 20.

The charges were laid as a result of that investigation.

Brandon police told the watchdog agency on Oct. 18 that its officers responded to a noise complaint involving loud music on Ninth Street, between College and Van Horne avenues, shortly before 5 p.m. on Sept. 3, the watchdog previously said.

Later that same day, a group of people made a complaint about the behaviour of the officer who responded to the noise complaint.
