Man attacked with machete after argument over rent payment: police

A 23-year-old man dodged serious injuries after being attacked by another man during an argument over a rent payment, say Winnipeg police.

Officers were called at about 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday to Syracuse Crescent, off Chancellor Drive in the city’s Fort Garry neighbourhood, about an assault with a weapon.

They say the 23-year-old was getting ready to leave his residence when he was confronted by a man, 49, about the rent.

An argument escalated to the point where the older man armed himself with a machete and attacked the other man in the upper body, police said in a news release.

The younger man was able to get away after suffering minor injuries.

The older man, who lives in the same building and is a caretaker who also collects the rent, was taken into custody and charged with assault with a weapon, a police spokesperson told CBC News in an email.
