Kinew marks one year since being elected premier

It has been one year since Manitobans elected Premier Wab Kinew, and polls suggest his NDP government continues to enjoy a honeymoon with voters.

Kinew says he’s been happy to follow through on promises to temporarily suspend the provincial fuel tax and hire more health-care workers.

But he says there are challenges, and says getting health-care services to where he wants them to be will take years.

Kinew is also looking for ways to fulfil a promise to balance the budget by 2027 while also following through on spending commitments and giving pay raises to public-sector workers.

Kinew says government departments are looking for areas to control costs, but he would not provide any examples.

A political analyst says Kinew has succeeded in following through on election promises and in coming across as empathetic and charismatic.

Christopher Adams, at the University of Manitoba, says the NDP has also benefited from the fact the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives are still rebuilding after electoral setbacks.
