Man accused of lighting Winnipeg house on fire as police tried to arrest him

A man is in hospital after he allegedly lit a fire in a bungalow in Winnipeg’s St. Vital neighbourhood while trying to avoid police.

Officers went to the home on Worthington Avenue, near St. Mary’s Road, around 12:30 p.m. Monday to arrest the 44-year-man on multiple warrants.

The man was unco-operative and refused to leave the house or even open the door, police said in a news release.

The man fired a gun at officers from inside, but no one was injured, police said.

The tactical support team was brought in and a drone was used to keep an eye on the house. A nearby school was placed into hold and secure as a safety precaution.

At some point, smoke could be seen coming out of the house, police said. Officers continued their efforts to convince the man to exit.

A short time later he did, but he ignored officers’ commands, police said. Tac team officers fired bean bag bullets to bring the man down and take him into custody.

Fire crews were called in and extinguished the fire shortly after 3 p.m.

The man was sent to hospital for minor injuries in addition to smoke inhalation.

Due to the man being injured, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has taken over the investigation.

Damage estimates for the home are not currently available and information on the nature of the warrants was not released by police.
