Man killed following officer-involved shooting in Manitoba; RCMP searching for suspect in Saskatchewan

One man is dead, a woman is in custody, and RCMP in Saskatchewan are pursuing a suspect following an officer-involved shooting Wednesday.

Officers with the Manitoba RCMP confirmed Wednesday morning that a man was fatally shot by RCMP in the area of Drovers Run in Niverville, and a woman was taken into custody. They said a third person got away in a stolen vehicle.

The area will be blocked off for much of the day.

Images from the scene show multiple RCMP officers surrounding a truck in the parking lot of a gas station and Tim Hortons restaurant.

Myron Dyck, the mayor of Niverville, said he doesn’t know much else beyond what RCMP has shared, but added he was sad seeing the news Wednesday morning.

“My heart goes to both sides of the incident, to the emergency services side that deals with stressful situations like this, and also to the other side, both have families that they love and love them,” said Dyck.

He said he is thankful for the RCMP and the work they do, as well as the people of Niverville for their understanding and patience during this incident.

Late Wednesday morning, Saskatchewan RCMP said officers were searching for a suspect who they said fled from incidents in Winnipeg and Niverville in a stolen vehicle. David Burling, 29, is believed to be driving a green 2016 Subaru CrossTrek with Manitoba plate LJB 238.

An increased RCMP presence was reported in the Esterhazy area at 10:20 a.m. as officers in the area searched for Burling.

In an update at 10:36 a.m., RCMP revealed that Burling is believed to be travelling westbound on Highway 22, possibly to the Fort Qu’Appelle area.

The Hanover School Division has put Niverville High School, Niverville Middle School and Niverville Elementary School on hold and secure due to the ongoing investigation.

Students will remain inside all day, including during recess and lunch.

Red River Valley School Division has also confirmed it is keeping students inside at Ecole Heritage in St. Pierre Jolys, as well as students in Ecole Saint Malo in Saint Malo.

Winnipeg police also responded to a scene at the intersection of Highway 59 and Highway 305. A damaged police vehicle with what appears to be bullet holes in the windshield was observed.

An RCMP spokesperson confirmed the two scenes are connected.
