Parts of downtown Winnipeg without power as Manitoba Hydro responds to underground equipment fire

An underground equipment fire has caused a hydro outage in parts of downtown Winnipeg on Wednesday.

In a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Manitoba Hydro said the outage began at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, affecting about 1,450 customers, including traffic lights.

“We’ll need to assess the damage, so we won’t have an estimated time of restoration yet,” Manitoba Hydro said in its post.

The Crown corporation adds while the fire has been put out, they anticipate traffic lights will still be down throughout downtown.

Meantime, the Winnipeg Transportation Management Centre says several intersections are affected due to the repairs.
