A new grand chief has been named for the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC).
After receiving 37 of 59 votes in the second and final round of ballots, Cathy Merrick was named the new grand chief.
She beat out George Kent on the final ballot.
Merrick becomes the first female grand chief in the AMC’s history.
The election came after former grand chief Arlen Dumas was removed after an independent investigation found he had engaged in workplace sexual harassment.
Dumas has denied the claims.
Premier Heather Stefanson congratulated Merrick on the win in a statement, saying she will provide great leadership in the role.
“Our government is committed to enriching our relationship with the AMC and advancing important reconciliation initiatives through collaboration and partnerships,” said Stefanson.
“As the first female premier of Manitoba, I look forward to working together with the first female grand chief of the AMC to take concrete action to advance shared priorities and to implement the fundamental principles that will guide our collective work to create meaningful change and promote truth and reconciliation.”
