27-year-old accused of ‘indiscriminately’ pointing semi-automatic rifle at people near HSC: Winnipeg police
A Winnipeg man faces a number of charges after police say he pointed a semi-automatic rifle at people outside the Health Sciences Centre early Tuesday.
Officers were called about a man pointing a firearm “indiscriminately” toward people on the 800 block of Sherbrook Street, between McDermot and Ross avenues and close to HSC, shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday, police said in a Wednesday news release.
Health Sciences Centre security and an institutional safety officer reported the man to police after they saw him walking around outside the hospital with the rifle. He pointed the firearm in their direction before running away, but they kept watching him until police arrived shortly after, according to the news release.
The man was still walking in the area with the firearm when officers stopped him and took him into custody.
Police say they seized the weapon, which they determined was an SKS semi-automatic rifle, from the man, along with what they believe was to be a small quantity of meth.
The rifle was not fired and no injuries were reported.
The man arrested was identified through his fingerprints after refusing to give officers his legal name, police say.
The 27-year-old has been charged with pointing a firearm while knowing its possession was unauthorized, possessing a restricted or prohibited firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, possession of methamphetamine and public mischief.
He was detained in custody.
