Man seriously injured after officer fires gun, Toronto police say

A man was seriously injured after a Toronto police officer fired his gun in Cabbagetown on Tuesday, according to Toronto police.

The shooting happened in the area of Carlton and Parliament streets at about 7:15 p.m., Toronto police said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Police said the man was armed with a knife. He was taken to hospital, police added.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate and is investigating.

Asked for further detail, the SIU said only that it is “investigating a police-involved shooting in Toronto that led to one person sustaining a serious injury.”

Carlton Street is closed from Parliament Street to Sherbourne Street for the investigation.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates the conduct of police officers in incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm or allegations of sexual assault.
