A 36-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with killing a father who was stabbed to death near his son’s elementary school earlier this week, police say.

Matthew Gerald Tomack Pelletier is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 49-year-old Ricky Dwayne Mancheese, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Friday.

Mancheese died Tuesday after he was stabbed on Kennedy Street between Cumberland and Sargent avenues that morning.

Mancheese’s wife Shirley Perrault told CBC News the couple was walking home to meet their 12-year-old son for lunch when the assault happened.

Police said they went to the area just before noon on Tuesday, when CBC News saw emergency personnel performing CPR on a man lying on a stretcher about a half-block from Sister MacNamara Elementary School.

Mancheese was rushed to hospital in critical condition but died from his injuries.

Pelletier was arrested on Wednesday around 6 p.m. and detained in custody, police said.
