SIU investigating after Peel police SUV collides with vehicle, leaving woman injured
Ontario’s police watchdog has invoked its mandate after a police vehicle in Brampton was involved in a collision that sent a police officer and a woman to hospital.
Peel Regional Police were called to the intersection of Bovaird Drive East and Dixie Road shortly after 9 p.m. Monday for a report of a collision.
In a news release Tuesday, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said an officer was driving a police-marked SUV on the way to a medical-related call when his cruiser collided with another vehicle.
When emergency crews arrived, a police officer and a woman were taken to hospital.
A 23-year-old woman suffered serious injuries as a result, the SIU said. The officer was not seriously injured.
The SIU has invoked its mandate and has taken over the investigation. The agency has not released any further details on what led up to the crash.
Three investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
Roads in the area were closed for the investigation, but have since reopened.
The SIU is an independent civilian agency that’s called in to investigate reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or sexual assault.
Anyone with information is urged to contact investigators.
