Police watchdog investigating triple-fatal Milton crash
Ontario’s police watchdog says it is investigating a triple-fatal collision in Milton earlier this year.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said in a news release Friday it is appealing for witnesses to assist in its probe of the March 30 crash.
The two-vehicle collision happened around 3:20 a.m. in the intersection of Derry Road and Sixth Line.
A 16-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man travelling in the same vehicle were killed, as was the 26-year-old man behind the wheel of the other vehicle. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.
The SIU said it was notified of the case by Halton police on July 22. The news release offered no further information about what led Halton police to contact the SIU, or why it took until July for that to happen.
CBC Toronto has reached out to the police watchdog for more details.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, injury or the discharge of a firearm, or led to allegations of sexual assault.
At the time, Halton police said officers had responded to the crash and that its cause was under investigation.
In an email Friday, the police service declined to provide any additional information about the circumstances of the crash or what led them to contact the SIU.
“As their mandate has been invoked we request any inquiries be directed to the attention of the SIU,” a spokesperson said.
According to the SIU, it has designated two subject officials and six witness officials in the case.
Four investigators, a collision reconstructionist and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the probe, the SIU said.
