MPP Michael Ford taking leave of absence from cabinet

Michael Ford, Ontario’s minister of citizenship and multiculturalism, is taking a leave of absence from cabinet.

Ford — who is the nephew of Premier Dog Ford and MPP for York South–Weston — made the announcement in a statement sent to reporters Friday.

“Earlier today, I spoke with the Premier and informed him of my decision to take a leave of absence from my Cabinet responsibilities as Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism, effective immediately,” Ford said. “This decision was made after much thought, and while it weighs very heavily on me, it is necessary for me to prioritize my health and well-being over the next couple of months.

“I appreciate his support and that of the residents of York-South Weston in making this difficult decision, and I look forward to returning to Queen’s Park in the near future.”

It is unclear if Ford will also be taking a leave of absence from his duties as an MPP. CBC News has reached out to his office for clarity on the situation.
