1 dead after crash involving 3 pickup trucks and semi-trailer on Winnipeg’s Perimeter Highway

A multi-vehicle crash at the eastern edge of Winnipeg claimed the life of one person and left another with a “major injury” on Tuesday.

Three pickup trucks and a semi-trailer collided at the intersection of Dugald Road and the Perimeter Highway around 12:30 a.m., leaving one of the pickup drivers dead, said Brian Seaton, fire chief for the Rural Municipality of Springfield, which borders the city.

“There was one major injury and there’s a fatality. We’re trying to piece [together] what had happened,” he said.

All pickup trucks were heading westbound on Dugald and the semi was waiting to make a left turn onto Dugald from the Perimeter, Seaton said.

The Springfield crews were called about a pickup truck that was on fire with someone trapped inside. When they arrived, crews from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service were there and had started to extinguish the flames.

The Springfield crews took over the scene and investigation, Seaton said, noting the driver of the semi was not injured.

Some roads in the area were closed through the night as the collision analysts examined the scene and debris was cleared away.

The roads reopened around 8 a.m.
