A woman has been charged with arson and failing to comply with a probation order in connection with a fire at a nursing station in northern Manitoba on Monday.
Lavern Chartrand, 20, was remanded into custody for a court appearance scheduled for Tuesday in The Pas, Chemawawin RCMP said in an updated news release Tuesday morning.
Officers received a report on Monday that the Easterville/Chemawawin nursing station, about 135 kilometres southeast of The Pas, was engulfed in flames at 5:35 a.m.
RCMP said the building was considered “a complete loss,” but that no injuries were reported. Officers continue to investigate the blaze.
Garrison Settee, grand chief of Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak, told CBC on Monday that it will take a long time for the community to recover from the loss of the nursing station, which played a critical role in serving people in remote areas. Its loss will impact the health and well-being of community members, he said.
