Man, 23, arrested after person found dead in Richmond Hill home
York Regional Police say they have arrested a suspect in a homicide investigation hours after a person was found dead in a Richmond Hill home on Saturday.
Police found the body on Saturday morning and arrested the suspect on Saturday afternoon. Police said the incident is targeted.
In a news release, police say they were called at about 8:25 a.m. by a family member to check on the welfare of a person in a home in the area of Gracedale Drive and Shaftsbury Avenue, near Yonge Street and Elgin Mills Road W.
When officers arrived, they found an adult dead in the home, police said. There’s no word on cause of death.
Police said the suspect, a 23-year-old Richmond Hill man, was arrested in Toronto at 3:07 p.m.
“There is no threat to the public. Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident,” police said in the release.
The victim’s name, age and sex have not been released. Police said they will not name the victim until a post-mortem exam has been completed and next of kin have been notified.
Earlier on Saturday, Const. Lisa Moskaluk, spokesperson for York Regional Police, said in an interview that police believe that the victim was last spoken to by a family member at about 5 p.m. on Friday.
Moskaluk said the suspect and victim knew each other but she declined to comment further on their relationship.
“We do believe this is a targeted incident,” she added. “This happened within a home and we don’t believe that this was a random event.”
Moskaluk said police believe the suspect had fled the home on foot.
Anyone with information, or video surveillance from the area between Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m., is asked to come forward to police.
