Major structure fire breaks out in downtown Orillia

Officials are asking residents in Orillia to avoid the city’s downtown area as firefighters battle a major structure fire.
The fire broke out early Tuesday morning at the corner of Mississaga Street and Peter Street in a building that houses several businesses and residential apartments, says a news release from the City of Orillia.
No injuries have been reported at this time, the city said.
The city has brought in buses to provide temporary shelter to those displaced by the fire.
The block surrounding the intersection is closed down, and power has been turned off in the area as firefighters monitor for hotspots and flare-ups in the building. The city says that work is expected to continue for the rest of the day.
Drone footage captured Tuesday by Justin Mercer of D & J’s Video Productions shows heavy smoke and flames shooting out of the top of a multi-storey building.

Residents living near the building are advised to stay inside with their windows closed.
Some transit routes in the city have also been impacted. The Laclie Route bus is not stopping at Peter Street and Mississaga Street or at Coldwater Street and Matchedash Street, while the South Route bus has one stop out of service at Elgin Street and West Street.
