Peace River women’s shelter gets $400K in provincial funds to fix mould problem
The women’s shelter in Peace River is getting $400,000 from the province to help with the cost of removing black mould that has kept 24 emergency beds closed since the end of November.
The mould was discovered at the Peace River Regional Women’s Shelter on the third floor and in the basement of the shelter at the end of November when workers were preparing to install new windows.
Staff can’t take in families until mitigation and repairs are complete at the end of March.
The shelter is facing a remediation and renovation bill of more than $400,000.
The shelter had to turn away away 57 adults and 25 children between Nov. 28 and Jan. 8. Due to privacy legislation, staff don’t know if women and children found refuge at another shelter at the region or were forced to return to an abusive situation at home.
In January, board chair Carol Van Slyke and board member Norm Duval went before six counties, towns and municipal districts in and around Peace River asking for financial help.
Northern Sunrise County council extended the shelter an emergency interest-free loan of $130,000 plus $20,000 in cash to help the shelter pay for three air circulation furnaces needed for the basement. Other municipalities also stepped up with financial help.
