Man wanted after shots fired at 2 people in Gimli could be in Winnipeg: RCMP

A 28-year-old man is wanted after police say he shot at two people in Gimli Thursday, prompting a hold and secure situation at a local school.

RCMP said Friday a warrant has been issued for the arrest of Joseph Henderson, 28, of Fort Alexander, who is accused of assault with a weapon, uttering threats and a number of firearms-related offences.

He is believed to be armed and dangerous, and could be in Winnipeg, about 80 kilometres to the south of Gimli, RCMP said in a news release.

Mounties in the Interlake community responded around 1 p.m. Thursday to a report a man had fired a gun toward two people during an argument at a home on Lake Avenue.

No injuries were reported in the shooting.

A 55-year-old woman from Fisher River Cree Nation and a 27-year-old man from  Kinonjeoshtegon First Nation (also known as Jackhead) left the home where the shooting took place and contacted police.

A 32-year-old woman from Kinonjeoshtegon First Nation was arrested at the home after officers found an improperly stored gun there, but RCMP said they do not believe that gun is the one Henderson is alleged to have used.

Schools and municipal facilities in Gimli were urged to take precautions Thursday in light of the shooting.

An email sent to parents from the Evergreen School Division Thursday said schools in Gimli went into hold and secure mode just after 1 p.m., but another email sent out just after 3 p.m. said RCMP indicated students could be dismissed from school at the usual time.

RCMP say they patrolled the town, but haven’t found Henderson.

Anyone who sees him or has information on his whereabouts is asked to call Gimli RCMP at 204-642-5106, or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 or by submitting a secure tip online.
