Wanted man charged with 2nd-degree murder of Tataskweyak Cree Nation man after shooting in isolated camp

RCMP are looking for a 38-year-old man who is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of a 53-year-old man who was shot at an isolated camp in northern Manitoba on Monday.

Gillam RCMP received a report of a shooting and went to the camp, roughly 75 kilometres east of Split Lake, just before noon on Monday, they said in a news release on Wednesday.

They found a 53-year-old man from Tataskweyak Cree Nation dead. RCMP have not identified the victim, but his death is being investigated as a homicide.

Jamie Flett, 38, of Tataskweyak Cree Nation, is charged with second-degree murder in connection to the fatal shooting. Tataskweyak, which is at Split Lake, is more than 700 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

RCMP said Flett and the victim knew each other.

Flett wasn’t at the camp when police arrived, and a warrant for his arrest was issued Tuesday.

Flett is five feet, nine inches tall, weighs 175 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes. He is believed to be in the Split Lake or Gillam area.

Anyone with information on Flett’s whereabouts is asked to contact RCMP at 204-652-2436 or submit a tip anonymously via Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
