Two people died in a residential fire over the weekend in Cross Lake Cree Nation.

Emergency crews were called at around 3:35 a.m. on Saturday to a home in the northern Manitoba community for reports of a structural fire, RCMP said in a news release Monday.

When police arrived at the scene, they learned some neighbours tried to rescue one person who was inside the house when the blaze started, but were unsuccessful, the release said.

Once the fire was put out, firefighters from the Cross Lake Volunteer Fire Department entered the house and located the bodies of two people.

RCMP said they have yet to confirm the identity of the people killed in the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
