2 killed in fiery crash north of Fort Saskatchewan

Two people are dead following a fiery collision northeast of Edmonton on Tuesday.

The collision between two semi-trucks happened just before 11 a.m., on Highway 825 near Boysdale Road. The area is in Sturgeon County, just north of Fort Saskatchewan.

Both semis caught fire, sending a large plume of black smoke into the air.

RCMP said one of the semis was hauling two empty propane tanks, while the other one was hauling pipes.

The drivers of both semis — a 41-year-old Edmonton resident and a 34-year-old Millet resident — were killed in the crash, police said Wednesday morning.

RCMP said other vehicles were damaged by either hitting debris or “taking evasive action.” Pictures from the scene showed at least two pickup trucks were also involved.

Alberta Health Services said EMS responded to the crash just after 11 a.m. Two patients were assessed at the scene but both refused to be taken to hospital.

There was a large response to the crash, including RCMP, Gibbons and Sturgeon County fire departments, Transport Canada, Fish and Wildlife, Alberta Sheriffs and Sturgeon County peace officers.

RCMP believe the semi heading south on the highway crossed the centre line and collided head-on with the semi heading north.

Traffic in the area north of Fort Saskatchewan was diverted for most of the day. Just before 8 p.m., RCMP said the collision had been cleared.
