A 65-year-old man was taken to hospital after a shooting at a rural property in southwest Edmonton on Saturday evening.
In a news release Sunday, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) said its officers, including the tactical unit and Air 1 helicopter and Leduc RCMP, responded around 8:15 p.m. Saturday to a shooting at a rural property near 173rd Street and Highway 19.
Police were told one man had been shot by another man at a home in the area. When police arrived, a woman came out of the residence and said the suspect may still be somewhere on the property.
Air 1 located the 22-year-old male suspect near the home and “observed the suspect suffer a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” police said in the news release. The suspect was later declared dead at the scene.
Police used an armoured rescue vehicle to remove the injured 65-year-old from the residence as safety precaution.
He was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The 63-year-old woman reported no injuries.
Police believe all three people knew each other but were not related.
The Director of Law Enforcement was notified and directed EPS to investigate.
