Edmonton police charge owner in April dog attack that killed 11-year-old B.C. boy

A woman has been charged with criminal negligence causing death in an April dog attack in south Edmonton that killed 11-year-old Kache Grist, of Osoyoos, B.C.

Crystal Jean MacDonald, 44, was charged Wednesday with criminal negligence causing death, the Edmonton Police Service said in a news release. The charges were laid by the homicide section, police said.

Just before 8 p.m. on April 1, patrol officers responded to a report of a dog attack in a home near 82nd Street S.W. and 11th Avenue S.W. in the Summerside neighbourhood.

Officers found a severely injured boy who had been attacked by two large dogs. Police attempted lifesaving measures until paramedics arrived. The boy died from his injuries soon afterward.

Kache had been visiting his father, who was living at the home.

Police said the dogs belonged to the father’s roommate.

A police spokesperson confirmed Wednesday that MacDonald owned the dogs.

The dogs were later seized by animal control officers.
