The town said the sinkhole in the eastbound lanes is about seven metres long and two metres wide. Parks Canada crews, Standish Towing, RCMP and Town of Banff Municipal Enforcement are helping detour traffic through town at all main intersections.

The teams are organizing a detour for later Thursday evening in which traffic will share the westbound lanes of the highway.
The town asked people to stay away from the existing detour route to allow transport vehicles to move through safety.
