Closures to start Wednesday as 4th Avenue flyover construction project begins

A series of road closures are slated to begin Wednesday for the start of a major construction project in downtown Calgary.

The Fourth Avenue flyover, a major connector for people commuting into the city’s core, will undergo a structural makeover that will take around 18 months to complete, the city says.

It’s a $12.5-million project that will rehabilitate the nearly 42-year-old bridge and, according to the city, prolong its lifespan for another 35 years.

“The Fourth Avenue flyover is a very important structure as it’s used by many Calgarians and visitors to commute into downtown,” said city project manager Max Lacroix.

“We understand this work may be impactful to those traveling in the area, local residents and businesses.”

Between Wednesday and Friday, single-lane closures on the flyover during off-peak hours will begin for pre-construction site surveys.

Then beginning at 9 p.m. Friday and lasting until 5 a.m. Monday, there will be a complete closure to set up construction (weather dependent).

Starting Monday morning, one lane will be closed, reducing flyover traffic to a single lane, on a 24/7 basis.

Temporary lane closures of underpass roads will be scheduled during off-peak hours, the city said.

The city said both lanes will be open to traffic during the Calgary Stampede, and access for transit and emergency services will remain except when there’s a full closure.

“We know that construction can be disruptive and make travel through the area more challenging,” reads a statement from the city.

“When traveling downtown, Calgarians should plan for and expect delays and traffic congestion due to reduced lanes, lower speed limits and detours.”

Site preparations started in March and construction is expected to finish by fall 2025.
