Calgary man who killed roommate should go to prison for 6 years: Crown

A sentencing hearing took place Tuesday for a Calgary man who killed his roommate.

Collin Oxtoby, 50, was found guilty of manslaughter last month in the 2022 death of Kevin Honish, 55.

On Tuesday, defence lawyer Jim Lutz proposed a four-year sentence while prosecutor Gord Haight asked Justice Michele Hollins to impose a six-year prison term.

As part of the sentencing hearing, Honish’s sister, Tammy Doucette, read aloud a victim impact statement on behalf of her family.

“We will never forgive this ruthless act,” said Doucette. “We are shattered.”

On the night of June 7, 2022, Oxtoby and Honish got into a fight in the home they shared in the southeast community of Albert Park.

Hollins found that Oxtoby hit Honish in the head several times in the course of the argument.

The victim and his girlfriend then walked to a friend’s home where his condition deteriorated.

The girlfriend called 911 and by the time paramedics arrived, Honish was unconscious.

He was taken to hospital and died eight days later.

In his interview with police, Oxtoby expressed that he did not believe he caused the fatal injuries because Honish walked out of the house on his own accord and did not seem seriously injured.

Hollins will deliver her sentencing decision next month.
