Four people were killed in a collision between a grain-hauling semi-trailer and an SUV in Rocky View County on Friday morning, according to an RCMP news release sent Friday evening.

Strathmore RCMP say the collision occurred at the intersection of Highway 564 and Highway 9 at 10 a.m. on Friday.

RCMP say an investigation is ongoing, however police believe the semi was travelling southbound on Highway 9 when it collided with the SUV as it rolled through the stop sign. Both went into a ditch southeast of the intersection.

The 68-year-old driver of the semi truck was able to escape before both vehicles caught fire, police say. He was treated for minor injuries by EMS.

All four people in the SUV — a 62-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man from Calgary, as well as a man and woman in their early 60s from the Philippines — were killed in the crash.

Officers urge motorists to drive with caution in the area as police continue to investigate.
