Winnipeg looking at acquiring Lemay Forest

The City of Winnipeg is looking into the possibility of acquiring Lemay Forest.

At a property and development committee meeting on Monday, Coun. Russ Wyatt brought forward a motion asking for a report on what could be done to acquire and preserve the land to create a public park. Wyatt said this may include expropriation but wants to know the city’s options.

The committee voted in favour of the motion with Coun. Sherri Rollins as the lone person to vote against it.

The public service has been directed to provide a report in 30 days.

Drama and protests have been unfolding for months at Lemay Forest after landowner Tochal Developments started cutting trees in September. The company was stopped soon after, but has since received a permit to remove the trees.
