Man, 23, dies while in custody at Brandon Correctional Centre

Brandon Police are investigating the death of a man while in Brandon Correctional Centre custody.

The victim, a 23-year-old man, was being held in custody at the medium-security jail when an assault occurred Sunday, says Staff Sgt. Kirby Sararas. Police arrived on scene at 5:30 p.m.

“When members arrived the … victim was being tended to by paramedics before being taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased,” Sararas said.

The death is being investigated as a homicide. Sararas says the victim’s injuries, which led to his death, are not believed to be self-inflicted.

The Brandon Police Service Major Crime Section and the Forensic Identification Unit attended the scene and continue to investigate. Sararas says the crime scene is contained to the Brandon Correctional Centre.

Charges are anticipated, but the investigation remains ongoing, she said.

In a news release, Manitoba Justice said no additional information will be provided about the victim and the death has been reported to the office of the chief medical examiner.

This is the second death at the Brandon Correctional Centre in 2024. In December three men were charged — two with second-degree murder and the other with manslaughter — after the November death of a man who was attacked at the jail in September.

The victim, a 44-year-old man who was being held in custody, was airlifted to Winnipeg’s Health Science Centre and later died from his injuries on Nov. 11.

Brandon Police did not name either the victim or any of the men accused.
