Fall is nearly here, and so is Winnipeg’s giveaway weekend

Signs that the summer season is slowly shifting into fall are showing up across the city — the leaves are beginning to change, pumpkin spice lattes have returned and giveaway weekend is just around the corner.

Whether you’re on the hunt to replace some household items or attempting to clear out your closets, the city is welcoming Winnipeggers to participate in the curbside swap Sept. 14 and 15.

Give your neighbours the opportunity to find their treasures among your unwanted items, reduce waste and keep usable items out of landfills.

If you’re curb shopping, be sure to only take things that are on boulevards and clearly marked as free.

The City of Winnipeg has a page of printable labels on its website that participants are free to use.

The city also reminds people to store away any items they don’t want to give away to avoid anything inadvertently going missing.

Examples of giveaway items:

  • Books, CDs and DVDs.
  • Furniture, electronics and small appliances.
  • Sports equipment and toys.
  • Yard and gardening tools and equipment (e.g., lawn mowers, snowblowers, rakes and shovels).
  • Kitchen gadgets, dishes, cutlery, pots and pans.
  • Unwanted gifts.
  • Construction material (e.g., nails, paint and wood).
  • Clothing.

Do not put out:

  • Items that could be unsafe.
  • Items infested with bedbugs (e.g. mattresses, furniture and bedding).
  • Toilets (with a flush volume of 13 litres or more).

The city also reminds people to stay off private lawns and gardens and to obey traffic laws at all times, including not blocking traffic or parking illegally.
