Ontario Education Minister Todd Smith resigns for job in private sector

Ontario Education Minister Todd Smith has announced he is resigning his seat and from cabinet effective immediately to accept a job in the private sector.

Smith has served in cabinet since Premier Doug Ford’s government was first elected in 2018, but spent the longest amount of time in the energy portfolio.

He spent less than three months as education minister, following a cabinet shuffle in June.

Smith said in a statement that it was a very difficult decision to leave, and he thanked his wife and children for all of their support over the 13 years he spent at the legislature.

Smith did not elaborate on his new position in the private sector.

The provincial representative for Bay of Quinte, Smith was first elected when the Progressive Conservatives were in opposition in 2011.

During Ford’s tenure as premier, Smith also served as the economic development minister, minister of children, community and social services, and minister of government and consumer services. He was government house leader between June 2018 and June 2019.

Ford said in a statement that Smith leaves politics with a record that he can be incredibly proud of.

“From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank Todd for his many years of service to our government, our province and our party,” Ford wrote in a statement posted to X, formerly Twitter.

More to come.
