Man dies after hit-and-run on Main Street in Winnipeg

A man is dead after he was hit by a vehicle that then left the scene near Main Street and Mayfair Avenue in Winnipeg early Thursday.

Emergency crews were called to the area, just across the Assiniboine River from The Forks, around 3:30 a.m.

The man was rushed to hospital in critical condition where he later died, police said in a news release.

Police say the man was walking across Main — a small stretch also known as Queen Elizabeth Way — when he fell. As he was trying to get up, he was hit by a southbound vehicle.

Traffic remains blocked along the southbound lanes of Main between Broadway and Mayfair as well as northbound Harkness Avenue at Mayfair.
